gratitude

/ˈɡratɪtjuːd/

noun

  1. the feeling or quality of being grateful/thankful

Gratitude is a powerful emotion. It helps shift our focus and our perspective from what our life is lacking to what we have an abundance of. Showing gratitude helps us remain in the present moment as opposed to always thinking what’s next. There’s nothing wrong with thinking ahead and wanting more but sometimes we spend so much time wanting more that we forget to show appreciation to what we already have. Practicing gratitude has many benefits. It is shown to make us more optimistic, it can help reduce stress/anxiety, it can help reduce the feeling of negative emotions such as envy, etc. There are many ways we can practice gratitude, I wanted to share my two favourite ways of practicing gratitude.

  • Appreciate Everything

– One way to practice gratitude would be to appreciate everything. It’s easy to show appreciation to things that are going right in our lives (which we should) but we should also find gratitude in our challenges. We should be thankful for the obstacles in our life and take more of an ‘what is this teaching me?’ approach rather than a ‘why is this happening to me?’ approach.

  • Keep a gratitude journal

           – Another way to practice gratitude would be to keep a gratitude journal. Keep a notebook that you use to write down the things you are grateful for. Every morning when you wake up or every night before you go to bed (or both) write down a list of things you are grateful for. The list can be as long as you want (I usually write 3 things every night before I go to bed)
